Host School: Department of Architecture, Kennesaw State University, Marietta, Metro Atlanta, Georgia
, USA

The Design Communication Association (DCA) along with the Department of Architecture at Kennesaw State University will host the 2021 International Design Communication Association Conference in Atlanta, Georgia, USA in Fall 2021 (Wed Oct 20 - Sat Oct 23, 2021)

Venue
The Department of Architecture, Kennesaw State University (Marietta campus) in Atlanta, Georgia, USA is the host of 2021 DCA Conference. The location is about 27 miles north of Atlanta International Airport. Please visit "Venue, Hotel, Travel" page for further details.

Keynotes

Keynotes for the conference include internationally acclaimed individuals who had contributed to current trends of design thinking and its representation. Our three keynote speakers include one Atlanta architect and two internationally renown designers.

Keynote: BIG | Bjarke Ingels Group – Kai-Uwe Bergmann

Kai-Uwe Bergmann, FAIA is a Partner at BIG who brings his architectural expertise to proposals around the globe, including work in North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. BIG is a Copenhagen, New York, London, Barcelona and Shenzen based group of architects, designers, urbanists, landscape professionals, interior and product designers, researchers and inventors. ”We believe that in order to deal with today’s challenges, architecture can profitably move into a field that has been largely unexplored. A pragmatic utopian architecture that steers clear of the petrifying pragmatism of boring boxes and the naïve utopian ideas of digital formalism.” BIG’s architecture emerges out of a careful analysis of how contemporary life constantly evolves and changes. Kai-Uwe heads up BIG’s business development--which currently has the office working in over 40 different countries. He also oversees BIG’s Urban scales projects and supports BIG’s Landscape projects. Kai-Uwe most recently contributed to the resiliency plan BIG U to protect 10 miles of Manhattan’s coastline. Further projects include Reimagining Brooklyn Bridge, Brooklyn Queens Park, Smithsonian Master Plan, Pittsburgh Master Plan and Miami Beach Square. He complements his professional work through previous teaching assignments at the University of Pennsylvania, IE University in Madrid, and his alma mater the University of Virginia.

Keynote: Yazdani Studio of Cannon Design - Mehrdad Yazdani

The Yazdani Studio of CannonDesign is a laboratory for exploration and experimentation in architecture. Established upon the reputation and leadership of award-winning designer Mehrdad Yazdani, the studio leverages the best attributes of a small design studio with the resources and reach of our global practice. The studio includes a diverse team of architects, designers, 3-D artists, technical specialists, and creative thinkers entirely committed to pushing the boundaries of design—from refining concepts of sustainability to the application of radically new technologies and urban initiatives.

Keynote: Dencity - Bryan Russell

Bryan Russell founded Dencity in 2000 in Atlanta to fulfill his desire to design modern residential architecture. Bryan Russell believes that design, no matter the scale, is inherently equal, and of the pure beauty in how the details come together to create the whole. The design team at Dencity are invested through the life of their projects from early design through construction to ensure that the finished project is everything they dreamed it to be. This involves exploration and critical thinking, material research, contextual analysis, strong drawings, continuous pricing and construction schedule reviews from design until client move in, and exhaustive construction quality control.

Francis D. K. Ching
In addition, distinguished educator and prolific author of architecture books Professor Francis D. K. Ching will be participating in the conference and offering a workshop on drawing.

The theme
of the 2021 conference isDCA 20/20: Perception to Execution”. This theme reflects our vision to design and its interpretation as we move forward with extended options of tools and techniques from perception to execution. In general 20/20 vision is a term used to express normal visual acuity measured at a distance of 20 feet. It is a measure of the spatial resolution of the visual processing system. 20/20 vision represents the sharpness or clarity of vision at a distance. Our overall visual ability is dependent on peripheral awareness or side vision, eye coordination, depth perception, focusing ability and color vision. The notion of envisioning the act of design and its process can be conceptually parallel to this phenomenon of 20/20 vision.

The DCA 2021 conference theme looks at how we envision various phases of design from perception to execution. Along this line of thought the conference promotes papers and presentations that demonstrate current trends and future directions both in education and professional fields of design and allied disciplines. The theme reflects the recent emergence and inclusion of various digital, virtual, and manual tangents that influence the way we envision design as well as conceptual shifts focus affecting perception and execution.

Papers and presentations that include but are not limited to approaches and applications of current trends of design and its interrelationships with allied disciplines are invited to foster and contribute to the discussion of the conference theme. These allied disciplines include architecture, digital media, environment, interior, landscape, media arts, urbanism, housing, etc. All submissions are expected to be original and have not been published previously at other scholarly venues.
